Chair’s Message

Professor Nancy L. Glenn Griesinger

Welcome to the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Texas Southern University.  We are part of the College of Science, Engineering, and Technology in the second largest HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) in the country.  Professors work one-on-one with students.    We are a small, intimate department that is located in Houston, Texas, the fourth largest city in the nation.  The small size of our department allows us to promote a nurturing environment that encompasses national and international multiculturalism.  Our students come to TSU from all over the world. 

Because of our HBCU status there is an abundance of scholarships, stipends, and financial aid available for all students in good academic standing.  We offer several scholarships including a 20-year renewable scholarship from the National Science Foundation, LSAMP (Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation), as well as scholarships through the Thomas F. Freeman Honors College.    

Our students have access to the University’s academic support services (SASS – Student Academic Support Services) to help them matriculate and to graduate.  We also have state-of-the-art facilities that are conducive to learning.  We are housed in the TSU Science Center, which was built a little over 10 years ago.  The TSU Science Center includes biological, chemical, and computer laboratories that are updated regularly.  All classrooms contain modern audio-visual equipment that professors use to enhance learning.  Classrooms are currently being upgraded to encompass live streaming capabilities.  

The curriculum includes academic preparation in the areas of problem solving, mathematical theory, computing, mathematics education, data science, and statistics.  We offer B.S. and M.S. degrees in Mathematics, 5-year B.S. to M.S. degrees (4 + 1 combined program), and a minor in Data Science.  Additionally, we offer two types of certificates: data science certificates, and graduate certificates for high school teachers.  Many of our graduates continue on to earn their Ph.D. degrees at other prestigious universities while others pursue private and public sector careers.    

The department’s professors have a long and proud history of research achievements in four focus areas:   

  1. Pure Mathematics  
  1. Applied Mathematics  
  1. Mathematics Education  
  1. Data Science and Statistics  

Within these areas of expertise, students are offered research and internship opportunities in local, national, and international corporations.  There are opportunities in both public and private sector corporations.
