Chair’s Message

Dr. Roderick Holmes

Welcome to the Department of Mathematics at Texas Southern University. We offer courses in Mathematics (MATH), the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree in Mathematics and a minor in Mathematics for students majoring in other academic disciplines at the University. The Department of Mathematics, one of the largest instructional units in the University, provides major support to the overall undergraduate curriculum at Texas Southern University since every undergraduate degree or program of study requires courses in mathematics. The curriculum includes academic preparation in the areas of problem-solving, computing, and other activities that depend on an understanding of mathematical processes. Requirements include components in mathematics, physical science, and management. Of course, preparation for advanced degrees and research programs are also stressed and made.

Producing high-quality graduates continue to be a top priority of the Mathematics Department; and in this connection one might mention that the university Valedictorians, in May 2013, May 2014, December 2014, May 2015, May 2021 commencements respectively were mathematics majors. The department has been quite successful regarding a number of past undergraduate mathematics students who have gone on to pursue M.S. or Ph.D. programs in mathematics or science fields. If you have any questions and interested in becoming a mathematics major, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Sincerely,

Roderick Holmes, Ph.D
